Innovations: Automatic lab boosts speed, quality

Back to Innovations

Hallmark Health recently completed installation of a fully automated laboratory robotics system, which will mean a higher level of safety and convenience for patients and employees.

Patient safety is a primary focus for Hallmark Health hospitals. This state-of-the-art system will help increase patient safety while continuing the mission of providing timely and accurate diagnostic testing - and hasten delivery of test results to physicians for the care of patients.

Through the use of the latest technology available, lab specimens from both hospitals are loaded onto the system, processed, and then transported to the correct area where testing can take place. All specimens are bar coded to indicate accurate patient information. This advanced technology eliminates much of the handling by lab technologists, resulting in a higher level of safety and fewer errors.

The new technology allows Hallmark to easily process it's typical 3,000 tests per day - the system can handle twice that number, allowing for future growth as patient needs increase.

"The automatic lab benefits employees, who now have a safer work environment due to the elimination of hands-on exposure to biological specimens," said Carol Gamble, MS, MT (ASCP), director of laboratory services at Hallmark Health. "Patients also see benefits through improved efficiency and accuracy, which leads to quicker test results and faster treatment."
